An electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG) is a diagnostic test that checks for problems with the electrical activity of your heart. An EKG translates the heart's electrical activity into line tracings on paper. An interpretation is then made by your cardiologist as to possible cardiac conditions that may be present needing further investigation.

An electrocardiogram may also be used to measure any damage to the heart, as well as to to detect certain medical conditions including coronary artery disease, heart valve conditions and arrhythmias.

Normal results from an EKG test will indicate a consistent and even heart rate and rhythm. Abnormal results from an EKG may indicate signs of a heart condition or other heart problems and additional testing is often necessary.
