What are Varicose Veins?

Most commonly found on the legs, varicose veins are easily recognized by their bulging, rope-like appearance that is visible just under the skin. Although they typically do not cause serious health problems, varicose veins can produce leg pain, swelling, itching and on occasion, superficial clots. Varicose veins frequently interfere in activities of daily living.

The treatments for varicose veins include stopping the leaking vein which is causing the varicose veins using a thermal ablation technique called Radio-Frequency Ablation (RFA) and then the bumps are removed by performing micro-phlebectomy. All treatments are minimally invasive and performed in our office by our physician who is an experienced vein specialist.

What causes Varicose Veins?

Many people, both women and men, suffer from varying degrees of varicose and/or spider veins. The development of vein disease can be due to a variety of reasons, regardless of where they materialize. It is known that at least 25% of the population has some type of venous disease, which can vary from small spider veins to venous stasis ulcerations. All veins have valves, and when the valves in the superficial system fail, blood is not transported back to the heart and falls back down the leg, causing high pressure in the veins. Essentially, it is a plumbing issue, and when we stop the leak, the circulation improves.

  • What are varicose veins?

Varicose veins are bulging, knotted, and rope-like veins. They occur on the legs and thighs, just beneath the surface of your skin.

Varicose veins occur when the vein valves in your legs fail to close completely. Over time, faulty vein valves allow blood to flow backward and pool.

Varicose veins usually aren’t a major concern, but they can make it uncomfortable to walk, stand, or exercise. In some cases, they also increase the risk of blood clots.

  • What are the symptoms of varicose veins?

    Symptoms of varicose veins include:
    ● Twisted or bulging veins.● Veins that are red, dark purple, or blue.● Aching or heavy legs.● Burning or throbbing sensations.● Muscle cramps.● Itching.● Skin discoloration.
As your varicose veins grow in size, you might also experience pain after sitting or standing for long periods.

  • Risk factors for varicose veins

Varicose veins affect people of all genders and races, but several factors may increase your risk, including:
    ● Age.● Pregnancy.● Family History of Varicose Veins.● Sedentary Lifestyle.● Obesity.● Prolonged Standing or Sitting.● Hormonal Changes.

  • How are varicose veins diagnosed?

To diagnose Varicose Veins at the Heart & Vascular Center of North Houston, we conduct a physical exam, review your medical history, and ask about your symptoms and lifestyle.

An ultrasound of your legs, called a Venous Insuffiency Ultrasound, is used to determine if your veins function normally or if they are incompetent and leaking. Our trained and certified technicians measure the amount of reflux in the veins so that our physician can prepare your treatment plan accordingly.

  • How are varicose veins treated?

Heart & Vascular Center of North Houston uses several methods to treat varicose veins, including:

    Radiofrequency Ablation
Radiofrequency ablation uses an electrode and radiofrequency energy to heat up and destroy the incompetent vein. Following this outpatient treatment, your vein collapses and your blood reroutes to healthier veins throughout your body.

Radiofrequency ablation is minimally invasive, safe, and usually well-tolerated.

    Varithena
When it comes to treating varicose veins and getting back to your regular activities, Varithena offers a nearly painless microfoam treatment, requiring only a few needle sticks. Clinical trials show that only 4.0% of patients experienced pain at the injection site. This minimally invasive procedure not only alleviates varicose vein symptoms but also improves their appearance.

    Microphlebectomy
Microphlebectomy is another outpatient procedure used to treat varicose veins. During microphlebectomy, your provider makes a small incision near a vein. Then, they use a tool with a small hook on the end to pull the diseased vein out. After removing the vein, blood reroutes to healthier passageways throughout your body.

Microphlebectomy doesn’t require sutures or stitches. There’s little downtime and recovery is easy and painless.
